Notizie riguardanti i congressi europeo sul coworking, con la partecipazione del network Cowo. Prima edizione Bruxelles 2010, seconda edizione Berlino 2011, terza edizione Parigi 2012.

Coworking Europe 2012 in one word?

Coworking Conference Paris 2012Every year, right after the Coworking Europe Conference, some of us enjoy playing around with this idea: find the keyword that nails perfectly the specific mood of that specific conference.

In Bruxelles (2010) the keyword was sharing.

In Berlin (2011)community.

For Paris 2012… well, it’s not so easy.

Maybe organizer Jean-Yves Huwart had maturity in mind. And indeed we did hear in Paris a lot about specific projects with coworking in a wider perspective.

Hence the famous question came up, once again:

What is coworking?

On this matter, Cowo’s view has been defined in the Cowo Manifesto, but obviously lots of people apply the coworking spirit to different, and sometimes personal, approaches… that makes 2012 unsuitable for maturity.

Stating that, we could think of normalization, considering that the conference has taken steps in trying to define what coworking really is.

The closest we got to this, was on Day 2, when the program became liquid and every participant proposed a topic in the typical barcamp formula.2012 Coworking Conference

Actually the topics mainly covered specific needs of coworking spaces, and none of them went into the aforementioned question. Enough for normalization as the 2012 keyword!

Maybe, then, we could find inspiration on Day 3, in the morning workshops or in the afternoon tour of coworking spaces.

As a matter of fact, during the visits, the keyword diversity would easily popup as a choice.

We visited a good number of very different spaces, considering the huge differences in size, design, approach.

Fine with us, but the concept itself of diversity completely lacks that shared component that makes a coworking space a coworking space.

No diversity then, no good.

In the end, what we really need this year is a single concept able to convey in the same word the different ways in which a coworking space can be conducted, and the closeness that unifies them all.

So, dear coworkers, how do you like evolution?

Dopo Parigi: la terza Conferenza Europea del Coworking in una parola.

Coworking Europe Paris 2012

Il gioco è questo: trovare una parola chiave che riesca a riassumere lo spirito di ciascuna edizione della Coworking Europe.
Nel 2010 a Bruxelles la parola è stata condivisione.
Nel 2011 a Berlino è stata comunità. Nel 2012 a Parigi… beh, è dura.

Forse la parola che stava in testa a Jean-Yves Huwart, che l’ha organizzata, era maturità.

O magari business.

Gli interventi in programma per il primo dei tre giorni, infatti, sono stati dispeaker che hanno trattato casi in cui il coworking è stato integrato in una strategia più ampia, ma… così ampia da riproporre la domanda, ormai classica:

“Cos’è il coworking?”

…domanda alla quale Cowo, dal 2008,  risponde in modo chiaro, privilegiando le relazioni sulle dotazioni, sulle sale riunioni o sulle modalità di accesso.

Ma se ognuno fa a modo proprio… forse è prematuro parlare di maturità.

Allora la parola chiave del 2012 potrebbe essere normalizzazione, nel senso di ricerca di una definizione comune ed ufficiale di coworking (comunque qui c’è quella di Wikipedia, se serve).

Il momento migliore per definirla poteva essere il secondo giorno, quando il programma della conferenza è diventato liquido e le discussioni si sono distribuite su 30 temi diversi, proposti dai partecipanti e discussi simultaneamente.

In realtà, si è parlato fondamentalmente di necessità spicciole e puntuali per la gestione degli spazi, nessuno si è sognato di chiedersi “cos’è il coworking”.

Niente, neanche normalizzazione può essere la parola chiave.

Il terzo giorno ha avuto un programma diviso in due momenti: workshop a tema + tour degli spazi parigini.

Verrebbe spontaneo, ora, ipotizzare varietà, come parola chiave… i tour hanno infatti mostrato una grande eterogeneità di spazi; per dimensioni, aspetto, vocazione.

Allora, va bene varietà?
Pensandoci meglio, dal concetto manca quell’elemento unificante che indubbiamente si respira in tutti gli spazi visitati… e quindi?

Quindi dovremmo individuare qualcosa che allo stesso tempo renda conto dei millemila modi in cui si stanno sviluppando i molti progetti di coworking, che tenga conto però anche di una sicura familiarità.

Ok, forse potremmo esserci: che ve ne sembra di… evoluzione?

Wish. (On coworking conferences).

Wish we could go to all conferences we get invited to (we get a lot of invitations… thanks guys!).

Wish we had time and energy to meet all the wonderful people in coworking, worldwide. Wish we could listen to all the great speakers, and maybe network with them over a beer, afterwards.

Wish we could go to Austin, Tokio, Paris, Cardedeu, Alessandria, Madrid, Fontier Cabardès every year.

Wish we had public funding, so it would be easier for us to share resources. Wish we had private sponsors that freed us from our day jobs, and from moonlighting, often, too often.

Wish we were there with you. At the coworking conference.

We may not be.

Bear with us, we won’t be at the beach, nor watching the ballgame. For sure, we’ll be at the coworking space (possibly watching the conference online).

We’ll be taking care of our project, an eye on the conference, en eye on our day job, an eye on coworkers, an eye on new requests, an eye… (how many eyes do we need, to keep focused?).

We’ll be looking after our baby, trying to make it grow, like every day. No “epic shit” (quote), just normal stuff… fixing the web platform, maybe, or helping out someone in the community. Doing email work.

Wish we could stand up and offer you another Keynote (we have done some, over the years) where we tell you how wonderful coworking is, where coworking is still unknown, except to some courageous Cowo manager out there… places like Surbo, Cordenons, Sassari, Omegna, Bassano del Grappa, Sovico, Tortona. These people are not only opening their offices, they’re opening their towns to coworking, one coworker at the time. So proud of them.

So, we may miss a conference or two, but we’ll be connected.

We’ll be with you.

We’ll listen and we’ll talk. We’ll share with the community.

#CowoCamp2012 – Tutti invitati al coworking camp del 19 maggio 2012, a Milano. Ecco perché.

E’ la terza volta che organizziamo il coworking camp, e ogni anno il mondo del coworking è diverso, molto diverso.

Nel 2010, il progetto Cowo aveva appena compiuto un anno, ancora ci meravigliavamo che la rete stesse trovando adesioni oltre il nostro ristretto giro di contatti e amici.

Il coworking era cosa ancora poco nota, non solo in Italia ma in tutto il mondo.

Sembrò giusto, quell’anno, intitolare il camp

Di cosa parliamo quando parliamo di coworking?

Fu un momento molto importante per tutti noi, e una bella emozione veder entrare in quello spazio di via Maciachini tante persone da tutta Italia, molte delle quali mai viste né sentite prima.

Tra gli interventi: quello sul coworking e le istituzioni a cura del Cowo/VEGA di Venezia, quello dell’avvocato del Cowo, il primo legale in Italia (forse ancora l’unico) a studiare a fondo la normativa per permettere a tutti noi di operare nella piena legalità e correttezza, quello di Nicola Zago, allora marketing manager di Lago.

Qui li potete vedere tutti.

Chissà se aiutammo a definire “di cosa parliamo quando parliamo di coworking”.

Di certo iniziammo un percorso di confronto aperto e condiviso, con il piacere di vedersi in faccia tra coworker, gestori di spazi Cowo e… chiunque altro.

Un approccio che ha portato anche ad altri tipi di iniziative volte alla conoscenza reciproca, quali ad esempio il Presentation Lunch, piccolo format di “pizza-networking” (!) nato a Milano e in corso di diffusione.

Poi passò un anno importante, l’anno che vide Cowo partecipare al primo congresso europeo del coworking (nel novembre 2010 portammo a Bruxelles le nostre 7 idee sul futuro del coworking), l’anno in cui la nostra rete cominciò un’espansione progressiva in varie città d’Italia.

Il camp del 2011, quindi, si svolse all’insegna del tema

A che punto è il coworking?

Ricordo che la mia personale risposta a questo quesito fu… una presentazione tutta sui coworker, a cui rimandavo per la risposta. Non ho cambiato idea :-)

La partecipazione al camp, l’anno scorso, coinvolse addirittura qualcuno dall’estero – Giacomo fece in modo di organizzare il suo viaggio dalla Norvegia in modo da poterci essere, Miriam lasciò Barcellona apposta per venire a raccontarci del primo coworking Cowo all’estero, da Parigi arrivò Stefano… con la bici della sorella – oltre che un sacco di gente da tutta Italia.

Le presentazioni della giornata furono ben 18.

Ed ora, 2012, siamo al terzo appuntamento.

Il mondo del coworking non è arrivato al mercato di massa, ma ci manca poco.

Alla seconda Coworking Conference, a Berlino, abbiamo parlato davanti a una platea dove gli hacker sedevano a fianco degli immobiliaristi texani, dove i fondatori dei più importanti coworking americani – quelli che hanno aperto la strada a tutti noi come Jacob Sayles di Office Nomads e Alex Hillman di Indy Hall – discutevano di come i business center – Regus in primis – offrissero servizi di coworking, vantandosi di essere stati i primi a farlo.

Del resto, il mondo cambia, perché non dovrebbe cambiare il mondo del coworking?

Certo che il divario tra quei primi giorni del 2008, in cui iniziammo, e lo scenario di oggi, colpisce profondamente chi vive il coworking da vicino.

Nel frattempo, non c’è stato un mese in cui Cowo non sia andato a presentare la propria esperienza in conferenze, barcamp e incontri, l’assessore al lavoro di Milano è venuta a trovarci per conoscerci, la rete continua a trovare nuovi spazi – sempre senza sforzi di tipo “commerciale” da parte nostra (abbiamo sempre pensato che la diffusione della conoscenza e le conversazioni tra le persone fossero la miglior forma di “propaganda”).

Tanto, tantissimo movimento.

Troppo? A volte ce lo chiediamo.

A volte, la sensazione di perdere il senso del progetto ci sfiora, e anche per questo abbiamo voluto concentrarci e scrivere i 10 punti in cui Cowo si riconosce (ritorniamo al “di cosa parliamo quando parliamo di coworking”…), e arrivare così a un Cowo Manifesto: una guida che ci ricorda come ci piace fare le cose.

In questi anni abbiamo anche capito come il camp sia un modo speciale di capire cosa stiamo facendo, tutti insieme.

Perché il coworking – almeno secondo noi di Cowo – non ha alcun senso al di fuori della community che lo anima, delle persone che effettivamente fanno coworking, cosa molta diversa dal vendere coworking e dal parlare di coworking.

Come ho già avuto modo di dire,

il coworking non esiste, esistono solo le persone che lo fanno.

(A proposito di frasi ad effetto, ne ho un’altra: un coworking non è un bar, che rimane un bar anche quando è vuoto. Un coworking vuoto è un ufficio vuoto).

Ma torniamo al camp.

Uno dei punti più discussi nella coworking community – da sempre – è l’aspetto di business.

Che il coworking non sia un business tradizionale è ormai abbastanza assodato, ma è altrettanto assodato che un progetto che non ha una sua dimensione economica non va lontano.

E se Cowo, da questo punto di vista ha un’impostazione chiara – non a caso è arrivato alle dimensioni attuali – è importante che anche i singoli spazi di coworking abbiano una sensibilità economica precisa, orientata nel modo giusto, pronta a cogliere opportunità intelligenti di realizzare profitti.

Il Cowo Manifesto dice:

Nel nostro modello, la relazione viene al primo posto, il profitto al secondo.

Appunto: al secondo, non all’ultimo.

coworking europe 2011: 10 points for the gov.t

Alla conferenza di Berlino abbiamo visto la lettera del governo tedesco che chiedeva alla coworking community internazionale riunita per l’occasione, le 10 cose che servono al movimento del coworking per svilupparsi.

Mentre partecipavamo alla sessione di lavoro per scrivere la risposta, ci chiedevamo che cosa mancasse all’Italia per essere così presente, così attiva nell’ascolto.

Forse siamo ingenui, ma non ci rassegnamo alla mancanza di interlocutori, a un coinvolgimento più importante.

E così è nata l’idea di chiedere a chi amministra la città di Milano una cosa sola, ma non meno importante delle 10 del governo tedesco.

Chiediamo che l’assessore e/o qualcuno del municipio venga una volta, o magari regolarmente, a lavorare in un coworking.

Milano è la città che ha fatto nascere il progetto Cowo, e lo rappresenta magnificamente con ben 14 spazi di coworking, su 58 in tutta Italia.

Una realtà unica al mondo e ormai nota a livello globale, che ha appena riscosso il sonoro, continuativo e affettuoso applauso della Coworking Conference di Berlino, oltre 2o0 persone da tutta Europa, dagli USA e dalla Cina.

Tutto questo è nato a Milano, al Cowo di Via Ventura, che continua ad essere un riferimento per la community, non solo italiana.

Ecco quindi il testo della mail scritta stamattina all’assessore alle politiche del lavoro di Milano, Cristina Tajani, con cui la invitiamo a passare qualche ora tra noi.

buongiorno assessore,

mi chiamo massimo carraro e sono il fondatore – insieme a laura coppola, in copia – di un progetto di coworking nato a milano 4 anni fa e sviluppatosi poi in 39 città, con 58 spazi.

ho avuto notizia da dario banfi – autore del libro “vita da freelance”, anch’egli in copia – del suo interesse per il coworking, e ho pensato che forse è giunto il momento di presentarmi :-)

questa mail non è una richiesta di fondi né di assistenza di alcun genere, ciò che chiede è qualcosa di infinitamente più prezioso. 

ma prima due righe di presentazione della nostra realtà, che si chiama cowo.

cowo nasce sull’esempio degli spazi di lavoro condiviso nati in california nel 2005, da cui abbiamo tratto ispirazione online.
il 1° aprile 2008 abbiamo lanciato, attraverso un semplice blog, l’idea di condividere il nostro ufficio di via ventura (quartiere lambrate), a condizioni sostenibili (200 euro/mese una postazione di lavoro tutto compreso, con wi-fi bello pimpante e caffè gratis).

le postazioni erano (e sono) 7, la sede di lavoro è anche quella della mia società, che si occupa di comunicazione.

la risposta è stata immediata, ed è piano piano cresciuta nel tempo.

da parte nostra, non abbiamo inseguito il dio del profitto, ma – pur facendo attenzione al lato economico della faccenda – abbiamo sempre privilegiato le relazioni, in quanto pensiamo che nella società di oggi la rete di rapporti sia la cosa più importante, e noi la mettiamo prima del profitto, in ogni cosa che facciamo.

l’anno successivo, stimolati dalle molte telefonate ricevute, abbiamo messo online un altro blog: questa volta offrendo il nostro know-how a tutti coloro che volevano aprire uno spazio di coworking nel loro ufficio, nella loro città. 

compresi nel kit: knowledge-base legale/fiscale/amministrativa, spazio sulla piattaforma web, moduli di contratto a norma di legge, attività di comunicazione. 

fee richiesto: euro 250/anno, senza altre revenue o percentuali.

da allora abbiamo portato 58 realtà in tutta italia ad aprire il proprio spazio professionale (studio, società, azienda) al coworking. 

in altre parole, si sono formati 58 luoghi dove un giovane o una start-up a inizio attività possano avere un luogo di lavoro a prezzo sostenibile e – soprattutto – in un ambiente collaborativo.

sono orgoglioso di dire – e lo dico tutte le volte che posso, quando mi trovo in giro per convegni – che la città di milano è la capofila di questo bel progetto, con 14 spazi attivi.

tra le cose che non posso non raccontarle, c’è il coworking camp nazionale, svoltosi nel 2010 e 2011, sempre qui a milano, l’iniziativa “free coworking week” durante la settimana del fuorisalone, la piattaforma di navigazione “cowo wi-fi“, che permette una navigazione stabile, sicura, legale a tutti coloro che si trovano al cowo ed anche fuori, funzionando, di fatto, da hot spot pubblico.

tutto questo è stato fatto di nostra iniziativa, con le nostre risorse, investendo una montagna di giornate (e nottate) di lavoro, e cercando di non cambiare mai la linea di sostenibilità e collaboratività che abbiamo scelto fin dall’inizio. 

le entrate economiche del progetto sono basse e non compensano il lavoro, ma la rete di relazioni creatasi è ormai globale, con centinaia di contatti che si incrociano senza sosta tra i nostri spazi fisici e le varie communities online che si sono via via create (noi stessi gestiamo una presenza costante su 9 social network).

ma vengo alla mia richesta :-)

vorrei che lei venisse a lavorare una giornata al coworking.

mi sento di chiederglielo perché mi pare di aver capito, con sollievo, che questa amministrazione si distinguerà per la partecipazione e l’ascolto.

penso che il coworking sia una cosa da ascoltare, e non si può ascoltarla da lontano, o rimanendo chiusi nelle sedi istituzionali.

sarà un piacere presentarle i professionisti che popolano il nostro spazio (tra essi architetti, un ingegnere, professionisti del web, consulenti, progettisti)… e penso che potrebbe anche piacerle l’aria positiva, di sana voglia di costruire che si respira qui dentro.

Cowo’s 5 questions to Coworking Europe. Antoine van den Broek’s 5 answers.

mutinerie coworking: antoine van den broekAntoine van den Broek is involved – with his brother Eric among the others – in the Mutinerie coworking initiative, in Paris, France. 

Mutinerie only had a space for a short time, they are actually a nomadic community, travelling at each others’ places. The space opening is planned for early 2012.

We are twice as glad to host his views because we had the chance to meet Antoine one year ago: he managed to stop visit Cowo’s founder for a good chat, while travelling in Italy.

It will be a pleasure to meet him again at the Berlin Coworking Conference 2011, the event planned to start in about 36 hours… on november 3rd.

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

ANTOINE VAN DEN BROEK:

Ever since we were kids we’ve always been surrounded by lots of people and lived in a collaborative and sharing environment.

When we entered the corporate world, we missed that energy and those real relationships. We decided to launch a coworking space so we could chose who we want to work with in an attempt to unify our lives and to promote this way of being and working together.
Since then we’ve been talking with many inspiring people from all over the world. In fact we rarely travel anywhere without visiting the local coworking space, and we’ve learned a lot about community dynamics and collaborative organizations.

So yes our lives have changed since we started coworking.
And the ‘funny’ thing is that we only had a space for a short period; most of the time we’ve been working at each other’s places, in bars, parks, or in others’ coworking spaces.

We will likely open our new space in early 2012 and I am sure it’s going to be another interesting change for us.

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

A.V.D.B:

It is, above all, a strategic option.

It is a bet on the power of free and authentic relationships and it is a stance of openness to new encounters—even if not everyone sees it this way before experiencing it.
So, some people come for the commodity aspect, as there may be no real alternative to such cheap and flexible workplaces.

However, our duty as coworking managers is not only to fulfill our members’ needs by providing all the amenities of an efficient work environment, but also to go beyond this pragmatic level.
In an extreme sense, coworking can be seen as the inverse of a typical firm: Whereas a firm hires people to perform a precise and preordained task, a coworking space starts by bringing people together around common values, and from that, new projects begin to take shape.

In coworking, people are at the center of creativity and productivity.

COWO:

After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
A.V.D.B:

Yes there is room for coworking as a business, whether it be spaces management, associated services, or some kind of expertise you can bring to others’ organizations.

Some initiatives will remain close to the initial values of the coworking movement, others less; people will be able to choose.

What’s most interesting is the unknown part of the business model: the unexpected is to be expected.

Coworking creates trust and there is no business without trust. It is a crucial asset. People are losing trust in many institutions these days.

If you are able to generate enough trust between people, if people really trust you, you may well be in a good position to do good business.
This implies being consistent with the values you claim and being able to understand profit not only in financial terms.

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

A.V.D.B:

A new term is coined when we need to express a new reality.

Then its meaning gets diluted as more and more people start adopting it to suit their own needs and understandings.
Eventually people may spend time trying to reclaim the ‘original’ sense of the term, but this can easily turn into a blind debate; semantic evolution is part of the term’s life.

Today we use “coworking” because we need a common flag to unify hundreds of local initiatives. Essentially it’s an accessible concept that’s big enough to unite likeminded people who might have the same intuition, and clear enough to attract newcomers.
In the future, the word “coworking” might be overused or misused in an opportunistic attempt to divert some of the juice that this word can bring, and some of its caché might fade away for that reason. But this is not such a big issue.

When the word “coworking” dies, it will most likely because this type of organization has become the norm.

In that case we would no longer talk about coworking spaces in general but more often about particular coworking spaces and their specific communities and achievements.
Each of us will then be able to choose the space that best fits our needs and expectations, without having to wonder whether it is or isn’t a true coworking space. And pioneers will need to move to a new frontier.

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

A.V.D.B:

Regarding the numerous benefits of coworking for a local community, and the growing numbers of nomadic workers, it makes sense to expect public institutions to be involved at some level in the sponsoring of coworking. In our current tough economic climate, it is crucial to unify and thus empower the energy of creative people willing to take risks.

In any case we have no choice: the way we work has changed, and the state would do well to take this under consideration.
We could then expect the crucial task of creating coworking spaces to be supported by government. But the establishment of hundreds of state-run spaces would contradict the essential idea, which is let each community decide how and where it wants to work.

One of the great things about a coworking space is that it’s a genuinely bottom-up organization and a unique, community-driven entity.

Thus, government would ideally provide subsidies to bootstrap various coworking projects and to sponsor some social initiatives associated with coworking spaces.
We recently had a chance to meet some officials in our region and we were glad to hear that this is exactly how they see their role.

It’s what happens in Alessandria, Italy, where the lab121 group is warming up its future coworking community with events, seminars and meetups.

Alberto Bassi, co-founder of lab121 team, will take part in the first morning panel of the Coworking Conference 2011, in a few days in Berlin.

Awaiting to meet him in person, Cowo thanks him for answering the 5 questions.

COWO:

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

ALBERTO BASSI:

My life is not really changed, but I believe that has improved my way of working. In the coworking network I’m making useful contacts and I’ve done decisive steps in carrying out  those projects which which I had thought about for long. I go straighter into my business now.

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

A.B.:

The economic advantage of renting a temporary office is undeniable, and the strategic opportunity to work side by side with people with skills and expertise different from mine is the most significant advantage. Having a project you can find someone who helps you to develop it, and with a little luck also the buyers.

COWO:

After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
A.B.:

Yes, the rhyme coworking-business works!! But How? Not intended as an immediate economic returns or immediate growth in turnover, but as professional collaboration between coworkers and customers from inside and outside the coworking centres.

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

A.B.:

I do not fear that coworking can become simply a way to make money by renting a desk. Why? becouse it cannot happen! it’s natural for people to socialize and interact, so even those who rent trivially a desk, will turn to professional collaborations. Lab121 is a nonprofit association that allows members to grow through co-working, so even without the desk the Alessandria coworkers find a way to connect and work!

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

A.B.:

I believe that the co-working is partly an evolution of the concept of cooperative learning, already applied in schools: this means that coworking should be a basic service!

Jean-Yves Huwart is the organizer of the Coworking Europe Conference, both 2010 and 2011 editions.

As he himself states (see answer no. 1) the discovery of the “coworking spirit” at The Hub Brussels was a revelation for him.

From that point on, coworking has been his everyday professional state of mind.

As the organizer of two important events such as the conferences, he has accumulated a notably extensive view on coworking, in all aspects.

Awaiting to see him in Berlin in a few days, we thank Jean-Yves for sharing his points of views on the 5 questions asked by Cowo.

COWO:

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

JEAN-YVES HUWART:

Definitely. And in an unexpected way.

Like many, I used to be an employee. I was lacking challenges. Three years ago, then, I left my job to start a business of my own. The goal was to speak about the new way companies could organise themselves in a flatter way, using digital social platforms, creating a better collaborative culture and developing a more motivating working environment for the Gen X and Gen Y.

As a starting entrepreneur myself, I first tried to work from home. It was a nightmare. I was losing social contacts and my productivity dropped.

Then, a new coworking space opened up nearby, the Hub Brussels. It has been a kind of a revelation. I found for myself a new working experience which could fullfill my freshly discovered needs as a starter. Moreover, regarding my activities, Coworking appeared to me as a perfect tool and mindset to address the challenges of the economy of the 21st century, which needs more interconnected innovators and entrepreneurs, while the traditional corporation model will be forced to shift to a new paradigm embracing openess, collaboration, sustainability and human values.

That’s why we decided to organise a first international conference on the topic of coworking.

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

J. H.:

It can be both. 

For sure, it starts with the flexible model. For a pre-determined capacity (15, 20, 50 seats or more), 100, 150 or more members will likely sign up. This is the base for the community. If the tenants are there, first, for the purpose of having an office for cheap, so be it. It’s no big deal.  

Now, a coworking space can dramaticaly increase its outreach with events, facilitations, games open for non members. This generates traffic in and around the place. Eventually, hundreds of people can take part in the community via an online subscription to the newsletter and discussion on social network. 

In a classical office sharing environment, a pre-determined capacity give access to the related number of tenants or less. You meet the same people every day. This can ingrain a community spirit, of course, but never of the size and energy a genuine coworking space can support.

So, once the community is there, you have a platform to sprout almost anything: be a neutral spot for collaboration between third parties, host creative events, network with other communities localy or internationally, work as a gateway for other entrepreneurs, etc. 

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
J. H.:

That is one of our goal at the Coworking Europe 2011 conference.

The first Coworking conference, in Brussels, last year, helped to connect the coworking movement and its players on the European and even on the global level. The coworking movement is enterning its teen age. Nowadays, we have all kinds of coworking spaces: self-supported by one or two people, added-on to another organisation, publicly funded… Other a real businesses…

However, we have heard a lot of coworking spaces stories which shut down because they relied too much on one individual who, after two of three years of operations, ended up exhausted.

I think no matter which model you choose. If the cash flows are too low to cover one person salary, at least (on top of the running cost such as the rent or the internet connection), the space won’t be sustainable. So, coworking can be a very good business, as some have already shown in Europe or in the US. The condition for that, though, is more professionalism.

COWO:

J. H.:

We are at the beginning of a deep economical and cultural shift. 

Digital social platform are outdating the former way of coordinate teams. Innovation won’t remain forever in ghettos. Working people, especially the younger generations, demand their professional life to be fullfilling. Moreover, look at the movement of the Indignados in Europe or at the uprisings in the Arab world. Graduated people are struggling to get a first job. 

So, we know that in the future, more and more, we will have to create our own economical activity. For these reasons, my assumption is that we will need more coworking spaces around the world. As starters, freelance or even regular employees will more and more look for a human experience. So, the market will learn steadily to make the difference between real coworking spots and fake ones.

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

J. H.:

A growing number of public local institutions acknowledge that the traditional tools used to develop entrepreneurship and networking in a city or a region are far from optimal in terms of impact.

The coworking experience seems a much more efficient approach to achieve the same goal. So, to me, they can perfectly support a coworking space financially. Of course, it’s better that the running of the space remain at arm length from the administration. It has to secure the space’s operational autonomy.

Cowo’s 5 questions to Coworking Europe. Anni Roolf’s 5 answers.

 anni roolf from coworking wuppertalAnni Roolf (MBA / project manager, innovation consultant, designer) organised the first european Jelly Week in January 2011, and the first Coworking Germany Barcamp in July 2011. 

Already in 2005 she experimented with a coworking space prototype in Wuppertal and wrote the coLabor-Manifesto.

Since 2010 she’s pushing the coworking initiative in Wuppertal / Germany, which is coming off with an exciting coworking space at the moment.

Right now she’s organizing the 1. Worldwide Jellyweek, which will take place in January 2012. She’s convinced that the coworking movement is still in its primary stage.

Anni – whom we thank very much for taking the time to answer Cowo’s 5 questions – will be among the speakers at the Berlin Conference, later this week.

COWO:

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

ANNI ROOLF:

Since I’ve started to think about coworking in 2005 many things changed in my life.

My existance as a freelancer was from now on embedded in a bigger picture, discourse and identity. As an also artistic person I knew mostly ego-centered behaviour from my professional entourage before. 

Then I wrote my MBA thesis about cooperative and game-based organisations. These deep thoughts on how cooperation as a principle could really work, didn’t leave me in my thinking and acting anymore since that time.

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

A.R.:

My clear answer is, that it’s first of all a strategic option, which is able to create value in terms of a commodity as one possibility.

Coworking can be shaped and lived in many different ways; coworking Spaces are only one in a big variety of (undiscovered) options. Coworking is a style of interaction, which will lead to a range of new products and services and also to new non-profit models of working, acting, living and transforming in the domain of public welfare.

If we don’t restrict the coworking discourse on coworking (spaces) as a commodity, we can really exploit the full potential of coworking.

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
A.R.:

Yes, it does.
Coworking is at least a new sector. Appropriate business models for spaces and other products and services are still in development.
It’s normal, that the participants (competitors) of a sector haven’t found the philosopher’s stone in its early stage.
I’m convinced, that coworking will also be big business, but it’s crucial, that coworking products or services never loose their philosophy of openness and collaboration.

Otherwise it won’t be coworking and will loose its USP. On the contrary it must be the aim of coworking entrepreneurs and coworking movement as a whole to influence and transform classical corporate cultures.

On the other hand coworking can be developed much more in the direction of non-profit aims and public welfare. These different circumstances and mindsets will lead to other powerful forms beyond business.

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

A.R.:

Yes, this fear is justified, but it’s also a kind of normal, if an insiders’ tip is coming to success.

I would suggest as a medicine to talk also about competition and how it can be compatible with the values and acting patterns of cooperation. A taboo on competition could be destructive in the core of coworking, the community.

The worst case for the movement would be, if coworkers would feel, that the coworking values are not true and only a marketing slogan. On the other hand it could be fruitful to deal with the concept of coopetition.
Developing and living the coworking values will decide the credibility of the coworking movement in the future, and this under the pressure of success and competition. I’m sure, that we will talk later not for nothing about the “art of coworking”.

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

A.R.:

I think this part will be huge in the future.

Because it depends on public decision makers, the process in this direction is slow. Coworking could be integrated in coming public infrastructure of all kinds. There are no borders. Everything is possible. And as a mental influence it will lead to organisational change in public administrations in terms of Customer Integration, Open Innovation, Open Government and Civic Particiaption.

In 2007 he founded one of the first coworking spaces in Spain: WorkingSpace.

In 2010 he founded the directory Coworkingspain.es. and now works to link all the spaces and create a Spanish co-community.

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

MANUEL ZEA:

Since I came to the first Coworking Europe conference as a speaker, I started the directory coworkingspain.es. In the beginning we were less than 30 centers in Spain. 
Last year, in junction with all coworkings in Spain, I work in growing the directory and the connection between all the coworking spaces. 

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

M.Z.:

At the beginning it was an option of having nice office with little money, but the coworking concept grows, and spaces start being a strategic option for knowledge and synergies for freelance, and innovation center for corporation. 

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
M.Z.:

The business of coworking spaces still having a difficult future in Spain. Coworking managers still a bit lose in how to increase their centers. But outside Spain, centers are making really good job. 
Coworking centers start to know how to make business with their centers, a lot of centers are recently open as business option and business center are looking to coworking as a product. 

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

M.Z.:

The coworking concept has a big way to walk yet.
The business model is not completely validated. But when we walk all this way it could be a coworking bubble and maybe some centers without the values of the coworking are destinated to close in the future. 

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

M.Z.:

I think city halls have to give entrepreneurs and freelances the tools to start or improve their business, and everything they make to help freelance improve their business will be beneficial to all.

Cowo’s 5 questions to Coworking Europe. Liu Yan’s 5 answers.

Liu Yan, from Xin Danwei coworking space (Shanghai, China)

Liu Yan is the CEO and event curator of coworking space Xin Danwei (which means New Work Unit) Coworking, in Shanghai, one of the first spaces operating in China.

Since 2004, Liu Yan has been advocating cross-culture and inter-disciplinary connection and collaboration between Europe and China through events like Picnic and Dutch Electronic Arts Festival.

While we thank Liu for answering Cowo’s 5 questions, we remind everyone that her speech at the Coworking Europe 2011 Conference is due on nov. 3rd, 12.40 am

The subject of her talk is very promising: “Coworking Globalisation: The promises of coworking for China and coworking as a gateway between Chinese and European”.  

COWO:

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

LIU YAN:

Absolutely. Yes, I become Ms. Whoever-you-want-to-know in Shanghai. Our coworking center is the central hub where technologists meet artists, academia mingles with designers, hackers collaborate with farmers, a big melting pot for all kind of people and ideas. 

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

L.Y.:

It isn’t just about giving community whatever they need (shared office and facilities), it is also about catalyzing the community in the new ways of working: connected with one another, stay curious and hungry about different disciplines and culture, open up for sharing, collaboration.

However, in the real life, building a sharing community takes a hell lot of time, energy, resources, and professional expertises, on the top of your passion and dedication.

In our case, we have spent a great deal of time to learn how to administrate and manage the commodity well (make sure the printer works smoothly and the chairs are comfortable), which are the basic things for the coworkers to get their work done and enjoy this togetherness.
If there are conflicts in terms of resources, we will have to make sure satisfying the needs of coworkers has the priority, and the strategic options come next.

The biggest lesson I have learned so far is “even with a good will, what you are trying to accomplish doesn’t necessarily turn into some value appreciated by your community.”

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
L.Y.:

There is still a long way to go before majority of corporates rhymes with coworking.

Although open innovation has been practiced in the business for some years, we are merely in the starting point of getting corporate involved to create an open, collaborative, sustainable way of working. 

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

L.Y.:

Coworking is a new way of thinking, doing and working.

It is a social movement to unify our resources, experiences and wisdom to make our world a better place.
I believe more and more people will appreciate, accept, get involved in this movement, so it will gradually become the main stream of our society.

Meanwhile, whoever foster and (financially) benefit from this movement should be the hero of our time. People or organizations who try to make quick/dirty money out of it will exhaust their social capital and fail.

It is comparable to the Green Movement years ago, green has now become the new “gold”. I believe coworking will equalize to “working” in the future. 

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

L.Y.:

I think it is a great concept to turn coworking into a public service, or eventually integrated with the existing public services.

I believe the current coworking spaces are the pioneers to show the “new way of working” movement in each region or city, gradually, it will become the main stream, coworking will no longer stand alone as a separate service, it will become the new services of many public and private institutions.

I have discussed with some librarians and educators to introduce coworking services into their libraries or schools.

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

MINDAUGAS DANYS:

For me the biggest motivation behind opening the space was to be a changemaker and bring some social innovations to Lithuania.
However sometimes I feel that perhaps it was too early, or I did something wrong, cause it’s difficult to keep the place growing and members stay.

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

M.D.:

I’d prefer to look into coworking as a platform, however motivation of members is different, some see it as a utility some as a chance for personal growth and social changes.

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
M.D.:

With my experience I don’t see how coworking can become a business option, perhaps, and only, if it is used as a bi-tool by some venture capitalists and business angels who utilize serendipity to increase acceleration of their startup investees.
No chances of making it a business all by itself.

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

M.D.:

Since I don’t believe in commercial viability of coworking, I don’t see it as a threat.
On the other hand overexcitment leads to opening of more spaces without getting sustainable, thus ruining the credibility of the concept in the first place.
It’ s a much bigger threat than someone trying to make business out of coworking.

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

M.D:

I believe that coworking should become a norm both literally and theoretically, it should be everywhere and in different forms.

Flexibility, connectivity, sharing and openness has to take over the public space.

CoCoAthens is a collaborative work platform and coworking space supporting the development of social, cultural, artistic and environmental projects in Athens.

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

ALEXANDRE KAHN, MARIANNE WEHBE:

Coworking changed our life in the sense it changes the way of working, and gave another dimension of work with more professional socialisation which is required for new projects and start-ups, especially when aiming to develop original business models, not solely based upon high tech and economics, also social and cultural aspects. 

By working in multi-dimensional workspaces with different people, it favoured exchanges, creativity, synergies and catalysed motivation between co-workers.
Specifically in our difficult economic situation, such coworking spaces put back into question the ergonomics and psychology of our work, our activities.
We think it is important to develop Coworking’s concept and spaces to favour various forms of activities all over Greece. 

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

A.K. – M.W:

Coworking is both in our case (CocoAthens), but I would insist more on the second aspect: seeing Coworking like a creative platform for all kind of synergies and exchanges, sharing values, competencies and innovation.
We focused on providing support to other projects as well as ours.
Hence for some projects, we helped at an early stage identify their needs.
For others, we helped and encouraged preparation and deploying of business plans and followed-up progress. 

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
A.K. – M.W:

It depends of the sense you give to business and the kind of Coworking place you’re speaking about.
We think Coworking is particularly adapted for project preparation.
In many cases, co-workers had ongoing other activities.
Coworking was more used for new developments. 

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

A.K. – M.W:

There is always this risk of course, like in all innovative concepts and projects.
But even if a minority just tries to make money, depriving Coworking of its true meaning, the majority has to continue its activities showing the real “values” behind “working-together”. Costs for Coworking in our case were optional.
If somebody could not afford our anyhow symbolic fees, it was free.
We were glad leave free and open our spaces. We tried to catalyse some themes by organising Coworking into Waves, purposely away from sole high tech and economics, to integrate other dimensions such as social and cultural, because IT is now widely used in all fields of life, the necessary literacy for all professional projects.

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

A.K. – M.W:

We think it would be a good idea to put Coworking places, with specific services (Wi-Fi, equipment …), at the disposal of people generally.
We might be creating our new job, working on a project we find useful on top of an existing job. The benefits of public service would be tremendous in the case of Greece; it should be indeed a public service, especially as costs minimal and outcomes with high potential, a real catalyst for change. 

Coworking should be made “more accessible” to everyone, migrants included, to give a supplementary dimension to Coworking (social, for example with computer equipment for people that don’t have…).
Also, work takes so much of our time in our society, it would be good to have this kind of services for all citizens, like meeting-working-space, which favour exchanges, synergies and productivity, to encourage also open-mindedness, sociability and solidarity, active and positive values that all societies need.

Mr. Mazen Helmy

Mazen Helmy was born and raised in Egypt.

Graduated from Cairo university with a bachelor degree in civil engineering, minoring in environmental and sanitary projects.

He is the initiator of the “District Egypt” project.

The District is designed to be an on-ground space in the heart of Cairo for young business owners, (social) entrepreneurs and freelancers where they can meet, work, collaborate and co-create.

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

MAZEN HELMY:

Actually I can’t deny that i have been practicing the concept of coworking under many forms, even long time before getting to know the term “coworking”.
But anyway once I started understanding and practicing it more, it has direct impact on my whole working perspective.
It was like discovering the other side of the moon, and feeling the power of the surrounding community. 

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

M.H.:

Coworking is different than shared offices.
It’s not just about the infrastructure and the shared facilities, it includes the community factor as a major aspect as well.
I believe it’s more a behavior people practice despite the label of the space they are working in, whether they are sharing high tech, sophisticated  infrastructure, or the simplest form of a platform. 

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
M.H.:

If you are asking about doing your business the coworking-style, I can tell that for me personally it pays off.
I can see the direct positive effect of it. 
But talking about the coworking as a business, I can’t really tell you now. Our new project “The District – Egypt” is considered one of the very first few trial of setting a coworking space in Cairo/Egypt.
However, while going through all the planning phases, we figured out that there’s no yet – on the international level- a unique, ultimate profitable model.
That forced us to go deeper in understanding the real motive behind this initative; we want to create values, creating our dream working environment.
The revenue is important -as a step – to keep the idea self-sustainable and to improve/expand it.
But I believe in the future it should pays off somehow. 

COWO:

Considering the media craze, the flourishing of spaces, the many online tools coworking-related and… why not,this conference itself, do you envision the risk of tranforming coworking in a sort of bubble, where a minority just trying to make money spoils the beauty of the idea, ultimately depriving the word coworking of its true meaning?

M.H.:

Personally I trust so much the intelligence of the public; people are having a highly-sensitive sensor to detect and get a feeling of the real purpose of an initiative.
Besides that, the market – itself – has huge space and potential for other projects and initiative, and it’s up to the people to decide which way they want to go. 
However, still the real concept-believers have the responsibility to speak-out-loud using a media mix about the real meaning and practice of coworking. Showing real examples.
Why not later-on setting some kind of regulations? 

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

M.S.:

As the coworking is not much spread here in Egypt – yet – but integrating a mix of private sectors and government promoting and adopting the concept should have greater influence and impact in the near future. Specially in the schooling system, that would be my optimum scenario.
I dont  know – now at least – if the model is adoptable in all public services or  not, but that requires more serious study, and a unified  definition of the term coworking first.

Cowo’s 5 questions to Coworking Europe. Mattia Sullini’s 5 answers.

Mattia Sullini, Coworking Cowo Firenze/MattonaiaMattia Sullini is known in the coworking community for at least three reasons.

First of all, he’s the enthusiastic and proactive manager of his coworking space in Florence, Cowo Firenze/Mattonaia; secondly, he actively takes part in most coworking events (Cowocamp Italy 2010 and 2011, Coworking Europe 2010, and more), third – and most valuable – he is one of the most helpful and collaborative people you can find in a coworking space…

He kindly agreed to answer Cowo’s 5 questions to Coworking Europe 2011, thank you Mattia!

COWO:

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

MATTIA SULLINI:

Well, rather than having changed, I can say I moved to a completely different stage!
In a few months I switched from being a lone bedroom monkey (that’s the way young occasional freelancers in 3D graphics world are called) to an highly social, stimulating and crowded environment, with a lot of people coming in and out, chatting, inviting you for a coffee break, asking for your opinion wheter on their work or on the latest new… distracting?
No, it’s simply the coolest thing it might have happened. 

We are not done for staying alone, what might seem confusing and distracting, such as intense social interaction, is indeed the natural environment for the human being.

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

M.S.:

Being a coworking manager, I can say I’ve experienced this is the core of the matter.
Despite all discussions on coworking, everyone still mean different things with the same word .
In my opinion, coworking places are just hardware, such as a computer.
The results widely depends on the operator and on the software you installed.
If you limit the coworking idea to a shared office you just get the operating system running, but you won’t  experience its real potential.
I could summarize the “softwares” into two main categories: interactions among coworkers and collateral functions suitable to be added on a coworking space.
For the first group you just have to immagine you’d get in a coworking space professionals, with skills that are often complementary one with the other, similarly flexible and mindshaped, that working in the same place and not beeing competititors quickly learn to trust each other. And remove all limtations such as physical distance.
You’d get an almost ideal incubator for projects and ideas.
For the second group, coworking spaces can succesfully melt with other functions such as exhibitions, temporary shops, events, courses, meetings, art, workshops.
And I’d dare to say that these could be the functions that could make coworking spaces profitable: maximizing the income from the coworking itself might mean suffocating the process of making the coworkers feel as members of a community, and thus collaborative and active,  leaving them just thinking to have found a somehow cheap workplace solution. 

COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
M.S.:

Not in the traditional way.
Coworking is in my opinion the pre-condition for successful and innovative business.
Building a coworking place means setting up a nest for ideas and projects, and by tuning the place you could even choose what kind of professionals it will attract, by that choosing also what kind of community and team you are trying to build.
But as I’ve stated before, there are direct chances for business, also.
Joining networks and giving the chance of feeling active members of a community, will multiply the chances of feeding all your collateral businesses connected to the activity of the coworking in itself. 

COWO:

M.S.:

This risk is real, and is nested in the perception of coworking as a “thing” that works in itself.
This would mean betraying its DNA. Coworking spaces are exactly what our society evolution needs.
It’s not time for whales anymore.
Almost all professions now need flocks: specialization requires high mobility and flexibility, optimized teams working for continuously changing needs and tasks.
The crysis atomised many  classic working teams, creating an unprecedently wide number of independent, unbounded workers. The number of freelancers is growing, and big companies often cannot afford anymore the cost af working teams that need to be at the same time effective and economic.
Coworking is the ideal base for crowdsourcing and hiring professionals on project, or for delocalizing them even temporarily.
So, coworking will die if the coworking managers won’t realize that the place is just the beginning.

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

M.S.:

I really think that coworking would deserve much more attention, and a quicker response by public and private.
The social impact of the wide diffusion of coworking spaces could be very high.
I’m just imagining specialized coworking spaces, organized in a dense network, where every kind of worker might find an optimal environment for its profession.
A place with shared tools and machinery for craftmen, a place with a nursery for young mothers and fathers, or  another with a huge cool showroom for creatives and artists…
I mean populating our cities with nodes that would eliminate the need of making huge investments for igniting everyone’s potentials and projects.
That would – in my opinion – boost economy and society in way that is at the same time ethic and effective. Oh, and enjoyable, of course!

COWO:

Has your own life changed since you practice coworking?

ALEX HILLMAN:

“Changed” is an understatement. It’s hard for me to find something in my life that isn’t somehow related to Indy Hall or coworking.
My days are spent, for the most part, working at Indy Hall surrounded by my coworkers (compared to sitting at home and working on projects).
When I started Indy Hall I was a freelance web developer. Now I make most of my money applying lessons learned from coworking and from my time at Indy Hall to helping other businesses grow, and only writing code for fun.

Many of my closest friends and loved ones I’ve met through coworking.
Much of my travel involves a visit to a coworking space. 
Literally, everything in my life has changed, and for the better.

COWO:

Is coworking a commodity (i.e. the chance to share an office with little money) or a strategic option (i.e. a platform for all kind of sinergies)?

A.H.:

There are elements that are commoditize-able, mostly in physical infrastructure, but those elements aren’t unique to coworking so that doesn’t make coworking a commodity – it makes desks a commodity.
Coworking is an experience, and as you said, coworking is a choice.
Coworking is about who you work with and how you work. Where doesn’t matter, and it will matter less as time goes on. 
You could look at food as a commodity – but consider the experience and the quality.
McDonald’s is commodity food (and happens to share the cheapness you mention about sharing offices).
But people pay money, and spend a lot of time, finding amazing dining experiences because food is better when you share it with others and when it’s created with care.
That’s how I feel about coworking – it’s the fine dining experience of the workplace.
COWO:
After all these years of discussing, I think we should know by now if business rhymes with coworking. Does it?
A. H.:
Over the years, there’s been lots of question about the viability of Coworking as a business.
Since day one, Geoff and I have beaten the drum of sustainability.
We didn’t create Indy Hall to fill our pockets, but to contribute to the interconnectedness of Philadelphia that would ultimately pay off in ways that renting space couldn’t.
And it has.
Sustainability means that growth and retention must go hand in hand. Business and culture are symbiotic rather than parasitic in a healthy coworking space.
Our book keeper gets nervous every time I share numbers from our books in public
But in our recent year-end planning, we noticed one of our most remarkable growth trends:
In the first 9 months of 2011, our net income grew by 462.8% over the entire 12 months of 2010. And it’s not slowing any time soon.
We’re bootstrapped and have been profitable (defined: make more money than we spend) for most of our history, with some brief exceptions during expansion efforts. But this is an unprecedented growth level for us and we’ve learned a lot through the process.
This is exactly why I’m teaching my workshops.
To help people understand that the business and the culture are BOTH important, and help them understand how we make decisions that keep the two in balance.

COWO:

A. H.:

The media’s job is to tell stories. If it’s not telling the stories we want it to tell, that just means that the people talking to the media aren’t doing a good job of telling the right stories. 
I don’t worry about the fakers spoiling anything.
Bubbles only hurt the people who lose a grip on reality.
We stay true to our core values, and the fakers will burn themselves out.
It’s a big world, there’s plenty of room for people who want to make mistakes.

COWO:

What are your feelings about coworking as a public service, just like schooling or health services?

A.H.:

If you’re talking about coworking SPACES as a public service, you’d be describing libraries, parks, and other public spaces where people can gather and already do – they just might not call it coworking. Coworking isn’t a service. It’s an experience. You can do it anywhere. I don’t think it’s the government’s job to provide experiences. It’s to serve its citizens.
So while coworking doesn’t need to be provided by the government, I do think it needs to be understood by the government.
When we first started having city officials come to Indy Hall a couple of years ago, they said things like “I didn’t even know you could get things done this way”.
That’s the kind of positive disruption that a lot of stagnant and bureaucratic governments need.
If coworking and government are going to get in bed together, it’s going to be to teach each other rather than provide services for one another.

Coworking Europe Conference 2011 is approaching. We are all excited about it, and proud to be among its Official Ambassadors.

But… why not start talking now?

Here we are, trying to break the physical boundaries of “being in Berlin in those days”, throwing a few points in for the discussion. Thank you in advance for your comments!

Getting ready for Coworking Europe Conference in Berlin. (Are we?).

In a few weeks the Coworking Europe Conference will take place in Berlin.

We have participated in the 2010 edition – held in Brussels – with a video and the presentation “What will be the future of coworking? Seven Cowoideas”, which introduced the Cowo network to the European audience. How nice.

It’s a honour to be invited again for the 2011 event, to speak about our project during the friday morning panel (nov. 4th), where the speakers are supposed to discuss the following:

“Should you start a coworking space as part of a coworking chain, brand or network?”

Mmmm… I’m afraid we don’t have an answer to this (and the fact we are a network doesn’t necessarily demonstrate anything).

The way we see it, Cowo is not really about creating a network, it’s more about

telling people not involved in incubators/coworking/innovation they can actually be incubators/coworkers/innovators, by sharing their space.

In other words, we feel more like extending the coworking idea, enlarging the coworking map, broadening the coworking concept by involving more and more people… rather than building a network.

In this respect, it doesn’t really matter if you join a network or start on your own, because

the difference is in the people, not in the organization form.

If Cowo has some value, it’s because of the people in all the Cowo spaces, who bring energy, ideas, involvement, events, participation (online and offline) to the project. The network is the people, really.

Case in point: I got interrupted while writing this post, by someone due to open a Cowo space in a few days. Architect, owns a beautiful studio, is willing to share his space, experience, opportunities.

For him, coworking is nothing but the platform. And the Cowo network is nothing but the activator.

What matters is that he met someone who got him interested in coworking, and he’s about to open his space.

Whether he’ll be happy and satisfied with coworking will not be determined by his space belonging to a network, but by him being able to form a coworking community at his place.

Once again: the difference is in the people.

Well… time to work on some slides now! :-)

Ecco i primi interventi confermati per il #cowocamp2011 (Milano, 16 aprile).

Avranno 10 minuti secchi a testa, a cui seguiranno 10 minuti di domande.

Sono già 14, a tre settimane dal camp. Se qualcuno vuole aggiungersi, faccia presto!

Tra loro, molti sono coworker, e porteranno al camp il racconto delle giornate al Cowo, attraverso le singole esperienze, tutte diverse, tutte importanti.

Poi non mancheranno i cowomanager, uno studente con un progetto innovativo, un’idea per dormire al Cowo(!)…

Insomma, se l’anno scorso abbiamo percorso l’ABC del coworking (ricordate? L’intervento dell’avvocato sul “Cowo e la legge“, quello dell’esperto di reti, la proposta di legge con gli incentivi al coworking…), quest’anno entriamo nel vivo delle esperienze.

Ecco i primi ad aver confermato un intervento.

1.
Comincio da Davide Tagliapietra, coworker dal 2008, entusiasta e talentoso yacht designer.
Davide ci parlerà della sua giornata di lavoro tipica, tra Milano – dove si trova lui -  Venezia ed Amsterdam, dove si trovano i partner e collaboratori della sua società, la Schickler Tagliapietra Yacht Engineering.
Tutte e tre le sedi sono in coworking e la maggior parte dei contatti avviene via Skype.

Michele Vianello
e Silvia Cammarata, rispettivamente direttore generale e responsabile clienti del Parco Scientifico Tecnologico VEGA di Venezia, non hanno bisogno di molte presentazioni.
Il VEGA è un’istituzione di grande rilevanza, un anello di raccordo tra università, centri ricerca e mondo produttivo che accoglie ad oggi 200 aziende e 2000 addetti.
In questo ambito, il Cowo/VEGA è da 12 mesi “portatore sano” dell’esperimento coworking; l’intervento di Michele e Silvia ci dirà con quali esiti.

Giacomo Neri
, di Ferrara, vive ad Oslo dove frequenta la Oslo School of Archtiecture and Design.
I suoi studi si stanno focalizzando su una nuova forma di orientamento post-laurea che avrà il suo fulcro operativo-logistico in uno spazio di coworking, da realizzarsi in Italia.

Da Udine, Annamaria Tuan verrà a raccontarci l’intensa attività che caratterizza dal primo giorno il Cowo Udine/Ufficity.
Corsi di scrittura, incontri, presentazioni di libri, convegni, seminari di social media, lezioni di fumetto, sono solo alcune delle iniziative che hanno portato avanti, a cui si aggiunge lo sviluppo di alcuni progetti, particolarmente innovativi, legati alla Responsabilità Sociale d’Impresa.

Domenico Rao gestisce la neonata coworking community di Alessandria, che va sviluppandosi intorno al “lab121“, lo spazio recentemente aperto in quella città.
Molti pensano che il coworking sia possibile solo nelle metropoli: Stefania ci spiegherà perché non è così.

Da Barcellona, sarà dei nostri anche Miriam Giordano, la nostra prima cowomanager internazionale!
Naturalmente, il suo intervento sarà sulla recente apertura del Cowo Barcellona/Born e sull’estensione del concetto Cowo oltre i confini nazionali.

Dario Banfi
, giornalista, partecipa a nome dell’Associazione Consulenti Terziario Avanzato (Acta) per raccontarci l’esperienza del coworking in seno a questa organizzazione.
Nel suo intervento troverà spazio anche il “Manifesto per il lavoro autonomo di seconda generazione“.

Emiliano Spaltro
ha scoperto il coworking da pochi mesi (la sua società di consulenza, in fase di start-up, è al Cowo Milano/Lambrate) e ha già deciso di creare lui stesso un coworking nei futuri uffici della sua società.
Essendo un analista molto preparato, sarà senz’altro interessante seguire il suo processo decisionale…

Mattia Sullini
arriverà da Firenze per raccontarci come funziona un coworking all’interno di uno spazio eventi versatile e poliedrico: Cowo Firenze/Mattonaia.
Mattia è un evangelist del coworking, ed ha rappresentato Cowo al primo congresso europeo del coworking, “Coworking Europe 2010“, lo scorso novembre a Bruxelles.

Nicola Ricciardi
è lo start-upper che ha recentemente definito Cowo come il suo “safe heaven”.
Quando non è in viaggio per incontrare gli artisti seguiti dalla sua società di eventi culturali, Mazen, Nicola ha l’ufficio proprio dove faremo il barcamp, e da lì ci racconterà la sua visione del coworking come luogo di lavoro ma anche di networking.

Michele D’Amore è un imprenditore del settore pubblicitario che coordina la sua attività da un Cowo gestito da… pubblicitari.
Come copywriter, ci racconterà cos’ha significato per lui questa contaminazione professionale e – grazie al networking tipico dei Cowo – anche personale.

Federico Bianchi è un caso peculiare nel panorama del coworking: dispone di un ufficio presso l’azienda di cui è titolare, ma preferisce – nei momenti di massima concentrazione – le tranquille scrivanie del suo Cowo di fiducia.
Sarà perchè è tra i pionieri italiani della mobilità sostenibile? :-)

Da Valentina Carta, cowomanager Cowo Milano/Palmanova, una provocazione e una proposta: si può dormire in un coworking?
La sua risposta è “sì”, con una soluzione davvero innovativa, e affascinante fin dal nome: “Big Bag Box“.
Se venite da fuori Milano potrebbe servirvi la sera stessa…

Infine, il mio intervento proverà a fare un punto sul tema centrale del barcamp: “A che punto è il coworking?”, alla luce di quasi tre anni di impegno quotidiano su questo fronte.

Por fin! Bienvenidos a Cowo Barcelona.

Llega el primer Cowo en el extranjero, y no podía ser un lugar mas atractivo.

La primera ciudad europea que entra en el “Coworking Project by Cowo” no podía ser otra que  Barcelona.

La mas dinámica e internacionál del mediterráneo, de hecho, la mas querida entre los italianos.

Cowo Barcelona/Born se ubica dentro del espacio Hop! design, un estudio de interior design y arquitectura, enriquecido con aportacioness del mundo de la comunicación, del diseño  y de la moda.

Durante las pausas se puede disfrutar del sol y de la playa en el chiringuito mas cercano…y solo hay un peligro: no volver al trabajo ;-)
